ACLC Board of Directors receiving the check from Jackson EMC Foundation, Mr. Johnny Fowler.  The money received will provide comprehensive training for those wishing to work with adult literacy both basic education and ESL.  The next workshop will be January 21 and 28, 2012, and will focus on training ESL volunteers.

Mr. Doss never completed high school and worked as an over the road truck driver.  When his wife passed away six years ago in an automobile accident, he was left with three girls under the age of five, he knew he needed to get another job and better education.  He obtained his GED in December 2010 and enrolled at Athens Tech.

To quote from his application, Mr. Doss said, “My goals are to raise my children and to support myself, all while enjoying what I do for a living.  Completing a post-secondary education is extremely important in helping me to accomplish these goals.  Also, it sets a great example for my children.  Changing careers can be challenging under normal circumstances, but with the climate of today’s job market, it is all but impossible to do without a formal education.

Every day I try to instill in the young people I attend college with some of the real life knowledge that I have collected over the years.  It is easy for them to think that they “should” stay in school and then for whatever reason not follow through, but as these young college students hear about my experience, I hope it will inspire them to continue their education and not give up.”
