Get Involved
More than one-half of adult literacy programs responding to a recent ProLiteracy survey said they rely solely on unpaid volunteers for instruction. This is also true in many programs in Athens. Though there are certified instructors at several programs, volunteers are critical in their service of tutoring students. Some ways to get involved are the following:
◊ Attend a workshop Throughout the year, ACLC offers trainings to the community that cover various topics related to adult literacy education. Some workshops focus on ESL, while others focus on adult basic literacy or GED preparation. All intend to enhance the teaching techniques of volunteer tutors and instructors to better serve adult learners in the Athens area.
◊ Help with the Spirited Spelling Spectacular Our annual fundraiser is held every summer and we need a lot of hands to make it a success. Whether your forté is recruiting spelling teams, creating a challenging wordlist, soliciting sponsors, or playing music, we need you – and it’s lots of fun! Contact the ACLC to volunteer.
